Watercolor Owlies for a great cause! :)

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that affects one in every 2,500 births. 115 babies are born with this genetic disorder each day. NF is more common than Cystic Fibrosis, Muscular Dystrophy, and Huntington’s Disease combined.

As part of NF Awareness Month, I painted two watercolor Owly doodles that will be auctioned on eBay from May 8th to May 18th.

Doodle 1 features Owly and Wormy happily playing in a forest pool with our actual fishies (Goldie II and Spotty II), who will star in the new upcoming Owly graphic novel. Doodle 2 features Owly and Wormy saying hello to a little bluebird, cardinal, and gold finch on a sunny hillside!

It’s an unpredictable disease that causes tumors to form on the nerves. Depending on their location, these tumors can cause disfigurement, dysfunction, deafness or blindness. In the wrong place they can be fatal. If that weren’t enough, NF can also cause learning disabilities, seizures, bone deformity, and cancer. Despite the many researchers studying this devastating condition, there is still no cure, and treatments are largely inadequate.

I lost my cousin, Kathleen to NF. She was a loud and lovely soul and I will do anything I can to help others affected with this horrible disease.

100% of the funds raised will benefit NF, Inc., an organization dedicated to providing support to individuals and families affected by neurofibromatosis by providing education, advocacy, coalitions, research for treatments, and a cure. I don’t do paintings like this at shows, so if you’ve ever wanted an extra-special Owly drawing, now’s your chance. There are also all kinds of other doodles by all kinds of celebrities! See the whole list here! So, bid away to help a very good cause! Thank you so so much! :)

I’ve decided to take Owly independent, so there won’t be an Owly story in this year’s offering from Top Shelf. But my friends, Christian Slade’s Korgi, one starring Johnny Boo,Jess Smart Smiley, one from Ray Friesen, and a preview of the new graphic novel Monster on the Hill by Rob Harrell and
a story from Maddy Kettle by Eric Orchard (who also did the awesome cover)!

I hope to have a stand-alone Owly free comic out (complete with a brand new story) in time for next year! Until then I hope you all enjoy the new stories and have an amazing Free Comic Book Day!

Our Chewie needs your help…

Early this year our little cairn terrier Chewbacca was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome, a deadly heart disease in which the heart stops every few beats. I haven’t posted much about this, but it’s been a rough couple of months as we’ve been struggling to help our little fuzzy guy… Luckily he made it through surgery and is now recovering. Our story has a happy ending, but emotionally and financially it’s taken quite a toll on us, and we could really use your help.

Please help Chewie and other doggies like him by donating to the ”Bless Chewie’s Heart Fund”. With a donation of $25 or more, you’ll receive a limited edition 5″x7″ “Bless Their Hearts” print starring Owly, Chewie, and their doggie friends!

Funds over the cost of Chewie’s continuing care will go to the U.G.A. Small Animal Teaching Hospital to help raise money for purchasing pacemakers for needy dogs who require them each year. Every little bit helps. Thanks so much!
