This year I was very honored to be asked to help out a kind and wonderful woman (and long time Owly fan) named Melissa Kern, known as “Fiver” in fan circles. She has ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease and sadly there is no cure. So, Owly and his friends decided to do their part for the ALS Association of Georgia, but we need your help, too, and your generosity is appreciated for this amazingly worthwhile cause.
To help out, you can bid on this wonderful pair of Converse Hi-Top Chuck Taylor Sneakers, size 9 (Womens SZ 11), hand painted by yours truly!
This is my first time painting on shoes, and even though it was tough, I put my heart and soul into these to make them something special! Each of the four sides of the shoes have a nighttime scene with characters and stars. Featured are Owly, Wormy, Snaily, Lady, and Batty from Bright Lights and Starry Nights. The Converse logo is painted over as a crescent moon. The canvas is completetly covered with the painting, the sky fading into a beautiful indigo spotted with stars, and the tongues of the shoes display “Owly” and “For Fiver”. This is a very unique, one-of-a-kind, incredible piece of wearable art that displays days of hard work.
The paint is flexible and the shoes are suited for wearing. (Just avoid the rain and don’t clean them with anything abrasive.)
ALL funds raised by this auction will go to The ALS Association of Georgia to Support:
Local Care Services: for people and families touched by ALS. These services include equipment loan closets, multi-disciplinary clinics, support groups, home visits, and educational materials.
Research: programs across the world committed to finding effective treatments and a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Our diverse research studies have advanced new discoveries and treatments, and have shed light on the complex genetic and environmental factors involved in ALS.
Public Policy: efforts that change current legislation to provide greater federal support to those with ALS. Current successes include increased veterans benefits, 24-month Medicare waiver, the creation of the National ALS Registry, and research funding by the Department of Defense.
If you don’t need a new pair of shoes, you can also donate to The ALS Association of Georgia by going to their website and clicking on the Donate button! All contributions are greatly appreciated! ^,^

Normally after Dragon Con I’d be on my way to Baltimore Comic-Con, but I wont be able to attend this year because of my inner ear issues that have been causing me vertigo over the past year. I need to take some time to rest up for our next adventure. But Owly and I will miss or Maryland friends dearly and can’t wait to visit Baltimore Comic-Con next year! ^,^
Owly and I are heading back to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to attend the awesome Anthrocon! We were very humbled to be the Guests of Honor a few years ago. And this year we’re heading back again, along with the amazing Mr. Peter S. Beagle!

Then, we’ll be on our way to San Diego for Comic Con International and we’ll have lots of goodies for everyone who’s coming to the show!
